America Ferrera on the Sweet Success of Ugly Betty

by Ed Martin

"Right out of the gate, people responded so warmly to the pilot and really took a very strong liking to it because of this character and what she meant," America Ferrera recently told a small group of television reporters gathered around her on the set of her hit ABC comedy Ugly Betty.

A Very Special Betty

by Verge

Ugly Betty has been doing an odd dance. Taking a page from the telenovela form that brung it, it has a campy mystery that continues to unravel (the death of Mode magazine's former editrix and the possible foul play on the part of its publisher) with the ongoing awakening of our heroine.

Ugly Betty: Family Values

by Verge

Maybe it's because we're close to Election Day. Or that it's Sweeps.

Tonight's episode carried the theme of family through the main plotline into its two subplots.

Betty's father, Ignacio, (Tony Plana) has come clean to his daughters about being an illegal. Both Betty and Hilda (Ana Ortiz) band together to raise a $20K retainer for a immigration lawyer. And that means that Betty begins pushing the show's version of NutraSystem/"Ask Me How I Can Lose 10 Lbs..."

Ugly Betty's Xmas in July

by Verge

Here's how we're gonna roll today: First an episode wrapup. Then some general thoughts on the show.

This week's episode was hard-working. It expertly used its crisis du jour to do two things at once: deepening its characters and story development of the series' great mystery -- what happened to Fey, Mode's last editor.

Episode 3: Betty Plays the Homegirl Card

by Verge

Ugly Betty is holding its own on the ratings front, getting the greenlight for a full-season, but can the same be said for story?

Before I answer that question, a rundown of this week's show:

Ugly Betty Steals Book from Prada

by Verge

If The Devil Wears Prada was seen by over 30 million Americans (domestic gross was $358 million), you can bet there's an overlap with Ugly Betty's viewers. In the second episode of the new series, we were introduced to the concept that a fashion magazine's Bible is The Book, a mock-up of the upcoming issue's content. Except, anyone who saw Prada (or read it) knows precisely what this is, and how no good can come of it. Does this familiarity help awareness, or make the plot device instantly passe?

Ugly Betty Debuts: America Ferrra Makes it Work

by Verge

I am always tempted. That is, not to believe the hype. And Ugly Betty has been touted THE fall show on par with Studio 60 and Heroes.

And the timing.

Either it's very good or too "on the nose."

Tonight's the night -- the long awaited premiere of ABC's irresistible Ugly Betty.
